Reznov during the uprising. Reznov was presumably captured and sent to a prison camp in Vorkuta and had been there for the past 18 years. There, he became a companion to an American prisoner named Alex Mason by gaining his trust and protecting him during their time in the gulag.
Is Alex Mason still alive?
In the other ending, Mason survives being shot. He is now 93 at this point, going to surprise Woods with a visit. It is also at this point Mason is reunited with his son, who he has not seen for about 40 years. While it is unknown what Mason was doing during this gap of time, it is nice to see him alive and well.
What happens to Mason in Black Ops?
In Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Mason is reborn alongside Woods, Hudson, Menendez, and Reznov by his granddaughter, Savannah Mason-Meyer. Mason would take the role of elder Woods from Black Ops II, and is reintroduce to Reznov, who supposedly survived the escape from Vorkuta.

This choice doesn’t affect the story per se, but rather the ending sequence of the game instead. If you shoot Mason in the head, you will kill him– and if you capture Menendez at the end of the game, David Mason will retire.

Reznov did intentionally counter-brainwash Mason. After spending two years in the Vorkuta Gulag, Mason and Viktor Reznov (who sabotaged Mason’s programming to kill Dragovich, Kravchenko, and Steiner instead) lead a massive uprising leading to their escape.
What happens if u shoot Menendez?
If you try to kill Menendez, he will grab Farid’s arm and shoot at him (first picture above). When Farid will be lying on the ground, Menendez will get upset with Farid’s treason and he’ll say that for those whom Farid serves his life is of no importance (second picture above).
Do you have to kill Mason?
If you shoot Mason in the head, you will kill him– and if you capture Menendez at the end of the game, David Mason will retire. If you shoot Mason in the chest however, he will live, and show up in the ending with David and Woods.
