Death Valley National Park
For years, scientists have been puzzled by the mysterious “sailing stones” of Death Valley. Located in a remote area of California’s Death Valley National Park, the heavy stones appear to move across the dried lake bed known as Racetrack Playa, leaving a trail behind them in the cracked mud.
How do the sliding rocks move across the Racetrack playa?
Erosional forces cause rocks from the surrounding mountains to tumble to the surface of the Racetrack. Once on the floor of the playa the rocks move across the level surface leaving trails as records of their movements. Some of the moving rocks are large and have traveled as far as 1,500 feet.
Do rocks grow?
Rocks also grow bigger, heavier and stronger, but it takes a rock thousands or even millions of years to change. Water also contains dissolved metals, which can “precipitate” out of seawater or freshwater to grow rocks. These rocks are called concretions or nodules.
Where do rocks move by themselves?
Sailing stones (also called sliding rocks, walking rocks, rolling stones, and moving rocks) are part of the geological phenomenon in which rocks move and inscribe long tracks along a smooth valley floor without animal intervention.
What can we learn from rocks?
By studying rocks up close, we can learn all sorts of things about Earth’s layers, including how old they are (how long ago that layer of the Earth formed), what type of rocks make up each layer (and what the properties of those rock types are), and what minerals form the rocks in each layer.
Do rocks have cells?
Only living beings are composed of one or more cells. Rocks are composed of mineral grains such as quartz and feldspar, which are far less complex than cells.
What causes rocks to grow?
Temperature changes can also contribute to mechanical weathering in a process called thermal stress. Changes in temperature cause rock to expand (with heat) and contract (with cold). As this happens over and over again, the structure of the rock weakens. Over time, it crumbles.
Is it safe to camp in Death Valley?
Death Valley is aptly named because for much of the year you can expect scorching temperatures. Camping is not advised in the summer months, and even in the Spring and Fall, visitors can expect temperatures encroaching on 100 degrees.
