Right now, there is literally no way of saying when the next major iteration to Kingdom Hearts is going to take place. However, considering the recent events and how long triple-A titles are made, our best guess is that we will not be seeing Kingdom Hearts 4 in the next 2 years.

Anyway, in the ending, Sora embarks on one last journey to save Kairi, who was punted off in the harrowing events of the finale. (Xehanort, being the big bad he is, dangles her over a cliff and then kills her.) Despite Donald and Goofy’s insistence to come along, Sora says he must go it alone. So yes, Sora dies.

In a climactic moment, we learn that Kairi’s heart has been inside of Sora the whole time, and he’s been carrying them both. So they’re not a couple in the dating sense, but they’re more than friends. The interest is vaguely romantic, but in a childlike manner, not what we would consider a “couple.”

Despite Donald and Goofy’s insistence to come along, Sora says he must go it alone. After all: his story began with losing Kairi, and now he’s lost her again. Then in a shocking moment, we see Sora fade away, signifying that wherever Sora saved Kairi from, he did not make it back alive. So yes, Sora dies.
